Five students from Manipur were arrested for the alleged gang rape of a 21-year-old woman from Tripura, all of whom attended the same private university in Guwahati. The police have detained two of the accused and are questioning the others. The accused, all 17-year-old minors, live together in a rented house in Guwahati.
The incident is said to have happened on a Saturday evening during a party at a house in Guwahati. The victim filed a first information report (FIR) at the Pani Khaity outpost on Tuesday. Following the complaint, the five accused were apprehended from their residence. Two of them have been taken into custody, and the remaining three are under questioning. Because the accused are minors, they have been presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
The victim told police that she had been drinking and realised she had been raped after she woke up the next morning. A case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act. The victim has undergone a medical examination, and her statement has been recorded. Authorities are awaiting the medical report for a clearer picture of the incident.
The alleged crime has drawn condemnation from various political figures, including Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma, chairman of TIPRA Motha, who appealed to the public not to reveal the victim&rsquo;s identity and offered her assistance. The private university where the students are enrolled has suspended the five accused boys due to their involvement in "unlawful activities" and plans to take further disciplinary action against them.
