In a major anti-narcotics operation, Manipur Police seized 57.285 kg of methamphetamine tablets worth ₹22 crore from a truck intercepted at New Keithelmanbi Police Picket in Imphal West. The driver, 34-year-old Nawaj Sharif from Thoubal district, was arrested on the spot.
Officials said the drugs were concealed in the roof of the vehicle. Upon testing, the tablets were identified as methamphetamine, commonly known as Yaba or party pills.
This follows a separate seizure last week by a joint team involving DRI, Customs, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police, in which heroin and opium worth over ₹55 crore were recovered from Churachandpur, alongside ₹35.63 lakh in cash.
Investigations indicate that these narcotics were smuggled from Myanmar via Churachandpur, a district sharing an unfenced and porous border with the neighbouring country. Two walkie-talkies, a vehicle, and additional suspects were also linked to that bust.
Despite tough terrain and security challenges, coordinated actions under the NDPS Act have led to repeated drug seizures in the region. Authorities warn that the Indo-Myanmar corridor remains a high-risk zone for narcotic smuggling.
