He was arrested within hours of the crime.</span></p>
<p data-start="325" data-end="503"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">The accused, Vikas Gauhar, reportedly killed his grandmother, Shanti Dhananjay, late Tuesday night in Salvi Mohalla of Indiranagar after she refused to give him money for liquor.</span></p>
<p data-start="505" data-end="810"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Shanti, a retired muster roll worker with the municipal corporation, was the sole provider for her family, relying on her pension to care for her grandson and his two children&mdash;a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy. Vikas&rsquo;s wife had left him a year ago due to his abusive behavior and substance addiction.</span></p>
<p data-start="812" data-end="1174"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">According to police, Vikas strangled Shanti while the children were asleep and concealed her body in the bed&rsquo;s storage trunk. The following day, Shanti&rsquo;s daughter approached the authorities, concerned about her mother&rsquo;s disappearance and Vikas&rsquo;s suspicious behavior. She reported that Vikas had locked the house and asked her to leave after a brief conversation.</span></p>
<p data-start="1176" data-end="1342"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Police began their investigation after noticing inconsistencies in Vikas&rsquo;s statements. A search of the house led to the discovery of Shanti&rsquo;s body in the bed&rsquo;s trunk.</span></p>
<p data-start="1344" data-end="1623"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 12pt;">Vikas fled the scene but was tracked down and apprehended shortly after. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime. Authorities confirmed that Shanti had been solely supporting the family since the death of her husband, Kishan Dhananjay, and Vikas&rsquo;s father, Dhanraj Gauhar.</span></p>
