Police in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district have arrested a man on charges of repeatedly raping a deaf and mute minor girl. 
The accused allegedly lured the victim with food over a period of time, according to local sources.
The most recent incident reportedly occurred on Friday evening (November 28) at Ghutiari Sharif, which falls under the Jibantala police station area. 
The arrested man has been identified as Kausar Sheikh, a local resident who works as a van driver.
According to local accounts, the minor, who is deaf and mute, resides in the same locality. 
The alleged assaults are said to have taken place when the victim was alone at home during the morning hours, while her family members were out for work. 
The minor's condition prevented her from immediately revealing her ordeal.
The latest assault came to light on Friday when the victim's family returned home and found her "covered in blood." 
She was immediately taken to the hospital, where her family was informed that she had been physically assaulted. 
The family later learned that Sheikh was allegedly responsible for the attack.
Mob Violence and Police Intervention
On Saturday morning, local villagers, "enraged by the development," attacked the accused after spotting him on the road. 
Canning Sub-divisional Police Officer Ram Kumar Mondal intervened to calm the crowd and assured them that legal action would be taken.
Following the dissipation of the crowd's anger, the police proceeded to arrest Sheikh. 
"The accused van driver has been arrested. A case has been registered, and an investigation is on," stated a senior officer of the Baruipur Police district.
The family has lodged a formal complaint against the accused at the local police station. The victim is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. 
The area remains tense in the aftermath of the mob violence, though police have stated that "the situation is under control."
