A man has been arrested for the alleged rape and murder of a six-year-old tribal girl in Madhya Pradesh&rsquo;s Seoni district, the police said on Friday.
The body of the child, who had been missing since 6 am, was found near a canal in a densely forested area of Nayapura&nbsp;around 4.30 pm, they said, adding that she had been abducted from her house while she was sleeping.
A post-mortem confirmed that the child had been raped and then smothered to death.
The police have arrested Kharda-resident Ajay Dhurve, who used to work on a farm in Nayapura, and registered a case.
&ldquo;During the questioning, he confessed to his crime and admitted that he abducted the girl while she was sleeping, raped her in the forest, and killed her. Later, he dumped the body near the canal,&rdquo;&nbsp;Nayapura police station in-charge Anup Uike said.
Protesting the brutality to which she was subjected, the child&rsquo;s family and other villagers placed her body at Gandhi Chowk on the Seoni-Malwa&nbsp;road and demanded the&nbsp;death penalty for the accused.
The police and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Saroj Singh Parihar intervened to calm public sentiment. They crowd agreed to end their protest after receiving a written assurance from the local area police that they would filed a chargesheet in the case within two weeks.
