Hyderabad police have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly killing his wife by setting her on fire and attempting to burn their young daughter in a horrifying incident reported from Tilak Nagar.
The accused, identified as K Venkatesh, a daily wage worker, was arrested in the early hours of Friday after remaining absconding for nearly two days. Police said the incident took place around 12.30 am on Wednesday, when Venkatesh allegedly poured petrol on his 26-year-old wife and set her ablaze, suspecting her of infidelity.
According to investigators, the victim worked at a hotel, while the couple had been living in Hyderabad for the past five years with their two children. During the attack, the couple&rsquo;s six-year-old daughter, who was sleeping beside her mother, woke up crying. Police said the accused attempted to push the child into the fire, but she managed to escape, sustaining only minor injuries.
Residents were alerted after a passerby noticed flames coming from the house and raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to the spot and found the woman engulfed in flames, while her children were crying nearby. She was immediately shifted to Gandhi Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim&rsquo;s father, Chityala Appaiah, police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder. The victim&rsquo;s body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem on Thursday.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had been harassing his wife for the past few years due to suspicion over her character. Police said the accused fled the scene after the crime but was later tracked and arrested. He will be produced before a court for judicial remand.
