In a development that exposes the enduring murkiness of Pakistan&rsquo;s internal terror dynamics, a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, Razaullah Nizamani alias Abu Saifullah Khalid, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Sunday in Matli, a town in Pakistan&rsquo;s Sindh province.
Nizamani, a key figure within LeT&rsquo;s command structure, had long been on the radar for his involvement in orchestrating multiple terror attacks on Indian soil. Most notably, he was the chief architect of the 2006 terror strike on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur. His involvement extended to earlier attacks, including the 2005 assault on the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru and the deadly 2001 strike on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, which left seven personnel dead.
According to information available, Nizamani had ventured out of his home in Matli on Sunday afternoon and was subsequently targeted near Matli Phalkara chowk, a junction not far from his residence. The attackers remain unidentified, and the motive, though suspected to be a possible internal settling of scores, has yet to be officially confirmed.
Reports suggest that Nizamani had been under protective cover provided by the Pakistani authorities. Following India&rsquo;s Operation Sindoor, launched in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Pakistan Army and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had reportedly directed top LeT figures to restrict their movements due to growing threats. His killing, therefore, raises questions about possible lapses in that security cordon&mdash;or a deeper rift within Pakistan&rsquo;s own patronage networks for militant groups.
Nizamani, who also operated under the alias "Vinod Kumar," had deep linkages with LeT&rsquo;s transnational infrastructure. He was allegedly a key operative in the group&rsquo;s Nepal module, overseeing logistics, financing, and recruitment. He is believed to have facilitated the cross-border movement of cadres into India via the Indo-Nepal border.
His ties to other senior LeT figures&mdash;most notably Azam Cheema and the outfit&rsquo;s chief accountant, Yaqoob&mdash;highlight his entrenched role in sustaining the group&rsquo;s operations. Based out of Matli, he had focused in recent years on fundraising and mobilising new recruits for both Lashkar-e-Taiba and the affiliated Jamat-ud-Dawa. Nizamani was also said to be married to a Nepali national, adding another layer to his regional network.
His killing, while eliminating a long-wanted terror mastermind, once again underscores the porous nature of Pakistan&rsquo;s relationship with globally sanctioned terror outfits. For Indian security and intelligence circles, the death of such a senior figure is a significant development, albeit one that leaves open questions about Pakistan&rsquo;s willingness&mdash;or ability&mdash;to dismantle the infrastructure it helped create.
