The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police submitted a sealed progress report on the alleged rape of a law college student to the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. The assault reportedly occurred on June 25 at the South Calcutta Law College (New Campus) in Kasba.
The report was placed before a Division Bench comprising Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das. The victim&rsquo;s family, present in court, expressed satisfaction with the pace and direction of the probe so far.
The Bench instructed the police to submit a fresh progress report after a month and to provide a copy of the current report to the family&rsquo;s counsel, while ensuring no media or third-party leaks, given the sensitive nature of the case.
Meanwhile, the law college authorities submitted an affidavit admitting that their own rule&mdash;requiring students to vacate the premises by 4 p.m.&mdash;had been violated on the day of the incident. The rape allegedly occurred between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.
One of the accused&rsquo;s counsel claimed his client&rsquo;s human rights were breached during presentation at trial, prompting the court to advise raising the issue with the State Legal Aid Services.
The case is currently being handled by the Detective Department of Kolkata Police.
