In a chilling development in the South Calcutta Law College gangrape case, police sources revealed that the main accused, Monojit Mishra, attempted to contact several influential individuals the day after the crime, seeking help to escape legal trouble. The outreach, however, was met with rejection.
Mishra, along with two fellow students &mdash; Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20) &mdash; and college security guard Pinaki Banerjee (55), is in custody for the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old first-year law student on June 25. Investigators say the incident occurred inside the college campus, specifically in the security guard's room.
According to mobile tower data and call records accessed by the Kolkata Police, Mishra moved across several areas of South Kolkata on June 26 &mdash; a day after the crime &mdash; including Rashbehari, Deshapriya Park, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road. He is also believed to have passed near the Karaya police station during this time.
An officer familiar with the investigation stated that Mishra contacted at least one influential person near Deshapriya Park, presumably seeking protection or guidance. However, the individual reportedly declined to intervene, instead advising him to stay away from the matter due to its serious nature.
Investigators also allege that the assault was not spontaneous. Call detail records indicate regular communication among the three accused in the days leading up to the crime, suggesting premeditation. On the night of the incident, the trio is said to have lured the student into the guard&rsquo;s room, where she was allegedly raped, while security guard Banerjee stood outside under their instructions.
&ldquo;After the assault, the accused remained at the college, consuming alcohol and instructing the guard to remain silent,&rdquo; the officer said. Later that night, they reportedly visited a roadside eatery along EM Bypass before dispersing and returning home the following morning.
The case has sparked public outrage, with student bodies and women&rsquo;s rights groups demanding swift justice. Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and more digital evidence, including phone records and CCTV footage, is being examined.
