Tensions have escalated at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) following the tragic death of a third-year B.Tech student, allegedly by suicide. The deceased, a Nepali student, was reportedly being blackmailed by another student, triggering widespread outrage among Nepali students on campus. What began as protests demanding justice has now snowballed into a larger crisis, as the institute has reportedly ordered all Nepali students to vacate their hostels immediately.
According to accounts from affected students, the decision came suddenly, leaving them in distress. &ldquo;We went to the International Office and sat overnight on a dharna, but we were sent back. We were finally asked to pack up and leave within an hour. We don&rsquo;t know how we will go. We did not have food. We are trying to get a ticket,&rdquo; a displaced student told media.
Another student, Rajan Gupta, shared his harrowing experience, stating that while they were peacefully protesting for justice, they were forcibly removed from their hostels. &ldquo;The staff members came and asked us to vacate. They even hit those who were not packing quickly,&rdquo; he alleged.
This decision by the institute has only fuelled further unrest on the campus, with students expressing anger over what they perceive as an attempt to suppress their voices. Video footage from the campus shows students gathered in large numbers, chanting slogans and demanding accountability from the administration.
Meanwhile, the situation has drawn international attention. Nepal&rsquo;s Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, has stated that his government is actively working on the issue through diplomatic channels. &ldquo;We are in touch with the authorities and are addressing this matter at the highest level,&rdquo; he assured.
As the protests intensify, questions remain about the accountability of the institute and the safety of international students in India. While KIIT has yet to officially respond to the allegations of forceful evictions, the incident has sparked outrage across social media and diplomatic circles alike.
With Nepali students left stranded, uncertain of their next steps, the incident has brought to light deeper concerns about institutional handling of crises and the protection of international students on Indian campuses.
