The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed Kolkata Police to submit a progress report and case diary within seven days in the ongoing investigation into the alleged gang-rape of a law student from Kasba.
The order came from a division bench comprising Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das, during the first hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) that had sought a CBI probe into the incident.
The next hearing is scheduled for July 10, by which time the court has also requested that the state government and college authorities file their affidavits.
Significantly, the victim&rsquo;s parents, who joined the proceedings on Thursday, informed the court they are currently not in favour of a CBI investigation, stating that they still trust the city police&rsquo;s efforts.
Initially investigated by Kasba Police, the case was swiftly escalated. Three accused&mdash;Monojit Mishra (a former student), Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (both current students)&mdash;were arrested within 24 hours of the FIR lodged on June 25.
The case was later handed over to a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by an ACP-level officer. As of Wednesday, the probe has been officially transferred to the Detective Department of Kolkata Police.
