Police in Kanpur have arrested 26-year-old Shivam Mishra, the son of a well-known tobacco businessman, in connection with a high-speed Lamborghini crash that injured three people earlier this week. Authorities tracked him down after receiving information about his presence in the city and moved quickly to take him into custody. He is expected to be produced before a court.
The arrest follows disciplinary action against a Station House Officer accused of procedural negligence in handling the case.
The crash occurred on Sunday near Ring Wala Chauraha when a Lamborghini Revuelto, allegedly associated with exporter KK Mishra&rsquo;s company, lost control at high speed. Investigators said the vehicle rammed into an autorickshaw and a parked motorcycle before veering onto the pavement and hitting pedestrians.
Autorickshaw driver Tauseef Ahmed and two motorcycle riders, Vishal and Sonu Tripathi, were injured in the incident.
An FIR was initially filed against an unidentified driver under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita related to rash driving and causing harm. Police later identified Mishra as the driver and added his name to the case. The luxury vehicle has since been seized as part of the investigation.
Witnesses described the impact as severe, claiming one rider was flung several feet while the motorcycle was dragged for a distance. Bystanders also alleged that private security personnel accompanying Mishra broke open the car window and pulled him out while he was unconscious, leading to a confrontation at the scene. Videos circulating online appear to show him being removed from the driver&rsquo;s seat.
Authorities are examining whether alcohol consumption or a medical condition may have contributed to the crash. Tests are underway, including checks related to possible seizures or epilepsy.
Mishra&rsquo;s family has maintained that he suffered a seizure while driving, citing similar episodes in recent months. His lawyer, however, has challenged the claim that Mishra was at the wheel, arguing that a chauffeur was driving and pointing to his fragile health. A court application has been filed, and further legal proceedings are awaited.
Meanwhile, Gwaltoli SHO Santosh Gaur has been removed from his post for alleged negligence and failure to follow due procedure after the accident. Officials also indicated that transport authorities could face scrutiny if medical findings suggest Mishra was medically unfit to drive.
The case has attracted additional attention as the Mishra family had previously been investigated during Income Tax raids in March 2024, when authorities reportedly seized luxury cars and cash from locations linked to the business group.
