A schoolteacher from Kalol, Gandhinagar district, lost nearly ₹30 lakh after falling prey to cyber fraudsters who posed as senior officials, including a fake Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer. The Gandhinagar Range Cyber Crime Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
According to police, the incident began on April 4 when the teacher, employed at a private school, received a WhatsApp video call from a man identifying himself as Mohit Sharma, a CBI officer. He falsely accused her of links with Pakistan and threatened action unless she immediately transferred ₹18,000. Out of fear, she complied.
Soon after, two more individuals contacted her, posing as high-ranking bankers. One introduced himself as Devanshish Mishra, Chief General Manager of the State Bank of India, while the other claimed to be a Central Bank manager. Together, they bombarded her with 10&ndash;15 WhatsApp calls a day, gaining her trust and extracting personal details.
The fraudsters then activated online banking in her mother&rsquo;s account and convinced her that the government would return her deposits with double benefit if she transferred money to certain accounts. Trusting their assurances, she made multiple transfers amounting to ₹29.90 lakh.
When no repayment came, she finally consulted her relatives, who realised it was a scam. She then filed a complaint through the cyber helpline. Gandhinagar Range Cyber Crime Police are now probing the gang&rsquo;s network and money trail.
Officials noted that such scams are rising rapidly across India, with women and senior citizens often targeted through threats of fabricated cases and &ldquo;digital arrest.&rdquo; A police officer warned, &ldquo;Frauds of this kind are increasing. Citizens must remain alert and never share personal information or transfer money based on such calls.&rdquo;
