A 42-year-old Indian national was tragically killed in a stabbing incident in the eastern part of Ottawa, sparking widespread concern within the Indian community in Canada. The Ottawa Police Service responded to an emergency call around 6 a.m. on Friday from a residential area on Provender Avenue, where they discovered the victim with fatal injuries caused by an edged weapon.
The deceased has been identified as Trevor Howard Needham, an Indian national who had been staying at the residence temporarily. Paramedics attempted first aid on arrival, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
&ldquo;We were alerted by neighbours about a disturbance. On arrival, officers found the victim and attempted life-saving measures,&rdquo; said Superintendent Jamie Dunlop of the Ottawa Police.
Local residents reported hearing a commotion in the early hours but were unaware of the severity of the incident until police arrived.
Later that evening, police arrested 38-year-old Jeremy Joseph Young of Ottawa. He has been charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder and is expected to appear in court on Saturday. The motive and the relationship between the accused and the victim remain under investigation.
This marks the eighth homicide in Ottawa this year and the third in less than a week, raising safety concerns among residents and the Indian diaspora.
The Indian Embassy in Canada expressed its condolences over the incident, confirming that the victim was an Indian national. In a post on social media platform X, the embassy stated:
&ldquo;We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of an Indian national in Rockland near Ottawa, due to stabbing. Police has stated a suspect has been taken into custody. We are in close contact through a local community association to provide all possible assistance to the bereaved kin.&rdquo;
The embassy has assured that all consular and logistical support is being extended to the victim's family through local Indian community networks.
