Saurabh Anand, a 33-year-old Indian-origin man, was left critically injured after a brutal machete attack in Melbourne, Australia. The assault occurred on July 19 around 7:30 p.m. near the Central Square Shopping Centre in Altona Meadows.
Anand was walking home from a pharmacy and speaking to a friend on the phone when five teenagers surrounded him. One attacker checked his pockets, another punched him repeatedly in the head, and a third held a machete to his throat.
While trying to protect himself, Anand suffered three severe blows to his arm with the machete, nearly severing his hand. He also sustained stab wounds to the shoulder and back, resulting in a fractured spine and broken bones.
Despite the intense pain and injuries, he managed to leave the area and call for help. At the hospital, doctors initially considered amputating his hand, but a complex surgery allowed it to be reattached successfully.
Four of the five teenagers involved in the assault have been arrested, and police investigations are ongoing.
This incident comes shortly after another Indian, Charanpreet Singh, was reportedly racially abused and assaulted by a group of men in a separate case involving a parking dispute.
The back-to-back attacks have raised concerns about the safety of Indian-origin residents in Australia.
