An Indian Air Force (IAF) officer has been booked following a counter-complaint filed by a call centre employee who was previously arrested in connection with a road rage incident reported by the officer. Police provided the update on Tuesday.
Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose, 40, alleged in a video posted online that he was pursued and verbally assaulted by a group of Kannada-speaking individuals while travelling through Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday. The officer described the incident as road rage, leading to the arrest of Vikas Kumar, a call centre team head employed by a software company.
According to police, both individuals were involved in the altercation, and videos that surfaced online appeared to show the officer physically confronting Kumar and creating a disturbance in public. The footage depicted Bose striking Kumar during an argument, despite attempts by his wife to intervene.
The incident took place while Bose was on his way to Kempegowda International Airport from his accommodation at the DRDO quarters, accompanied by his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita Dutta, who was driving the vehicle.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Devaraj D, confirmed that an FIR has now been registered against Bose at Byappanahalli police station under appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, following the counter-complaint by Kumar. The latter alleged that he too was assaulted during the confrontation.
Providing further details, DCP Devaraj stated, &ldquo;An altercation took place between them. Both attacked each other. Around 6 am on Monday, the Air Force officer was heading from his DRDO quarters to Kempegowda International Airport. His wife was driving, and he was seated beside her.&rdquo;
He explained that upon their arrival at the police station, the officer, who was bleeding, was advised by the Station House Officer to seek medical treatment before filing a complaint. &ldquo;But since he was getting late, he left for the airport. Once he went live on social media, we found out. We then traced Madhumita's details and approached the DRDO quarters. She came to the station and lodged a complaint. We have registered an FIR under (section dealing with) grievous hurt,&rdquo; Devaraj said.
Kumar, during police inquiry, claimed he was passing by when the officer&rsquo;s wife made a remark, prompting him to ask, &ldquo;What are you talking about?&rdquo; He stated he then approached Bose and asked, &ldquo;What is Madam saying?&rdquo;
The police stated that CCTV footage from the area, along with videos recorded by bystanders, showed that the situation could potentially have been avoided by both parties. &ldquo;We have a lot of video evidence and will proceed with the investigation,&rdquo; the DCP said.
In a video statement, Kumar&rsquo;s mother, Jyothi, appealed for justice, questioning the portrayal of events. &ldquo;Even after doing all this, if we had given a complaint against the officer, it would have become a big issue. But we didn't initially give a police complaint and returned, thinking let it go... this is a small issue. But now they (the officer and his wife) have made this a big issue and are troubling my son. I want justice for my son,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;
She further alleged that Bose assaulted her son and damaged his motorcycle.
Police confirmed that a complaint had initially been lodged by Squadron Leader Madhumita Dutta at the Byappanahalli police station against unknown individuals, following which Kumar was arrested.
