In a shocking case of alleged caste-based abuse, an eight-year-old Dalit student in Himachal Pradesh was reportedly assaulted and subjected to extreme cruelty by his school teachers, including having a scorpion placed in his pants. Police have registered a case against three teachers at the government primary school in Khaddapani, Rohru, Shimla district.
The boy, a Class 1 student, was allegedly physically abused repeatedly over several months by the headmaster, Devendra, and teachers Babu Ram and Kritika Thakur. According to the boy&rsquo;s father, the assaults left his son with bleeding from the ear and a damaged eardrum.
In an especially horrifying incident, the father alleged that the teachers took his son to the school toilet and put a scorpion in his pants. The child was reportedly threatened and intimidated to prevent the family from complaining. On October 30, the headmaster allegedly warned the boy, &ldquo;We will burn you,&rdquo; and threatened the father against reporting the abuse or posting about it on social media, saying he could &ldquo;lose his life.&rdquo;
The father also highlighted systemic caste-based discrimination at the school. Nepali and Dalit students were reportedly made to sit separately from Rajput students during meals, reflecting a pattern of bias that extends beyond individual incidents.
Authorities have filed cases under sections covering assault, confinement, criminal intimidation, cruelty toward a child under the Juvenile Justice Act, and provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, given the discriminatory and degrading treatment of the student.
This is not an isolated case in Rohru. Last week, a teacher at a nearby government school in Gawana was suspended for beating a student with a prickly bush. In a previous incident, a 12-year-old Dalit boy allegedly died by suicide in Limda village after being locked inside a cowshed by upper-caste women for entering their house.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of Dalit students and the prevalence of caste discrimination in schools in Himachal Pradesh.
