In a shocking case from Haryana, police have arrested a 32-year-old woman accused of murdering three young girls over the past two years, allegedly driven by resentment toward their appearance. Investigators say the woman, identified as Poonam, even killed her own three-year-old son to deflect suspicion.
According to the police assessment, Poonam targeted girls within her extended family and carried out each killing by drowning the children in tubs or tanks filled with water, staging the incidents to appear accidental.
The latest crime took place during a family wedding in Naultha village. The celebration turned into tragedy when a six-year-old girl, Vidhi, went missing on Monday and was later discovered dead in a storeroom. Her face was submerged in a plastic tub of water while her legs remained outside. Following an investigation, police arrested Poonam for murder.
Officials say she enticed the child upstairs after the guests had left, then drowned her and locked the storeroom door from the outside before returning downstairs.
During questioning, Poonam admitted to earlier killings. In 2023, she drowned her sister-in-law&rsquo;s nine-year-old daughter in a water tank at their Sonipat home. She later killed her own son, fearing her family would suspect her involvement. In August 2025, she allegedly drowned her cousin&rsquo;s six-year-old daughter in Sewah village.
Panipat Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh said the accused showed signs of severe psychological disturbance and confessed to harbouring jealousy toward &ldquo;beautiful girls.&rdquo; Police have ruled out any angle related to child sacrifice.
Authorities have informed the concerned police stations, and further investigation is underway into the disturbing sequence of crimes spanning multiple districts.
