In a significant breakthrough, the Gujarat CID (Crime) and the Railways&rsquo; Cyber Centre have busted an international cybercrime racket that routed Indian fraud money to Pakistan and Dubai using cryptocurrency transactions.
According to investigators, proceeds from multiple online frauds were converted into cryptocurrency and transferred to foreign digital wallets linked to a Pakistan-based network. The operation, officials said, reflects a growing trend of cybercriminals exploiting crypto exchanges to move illicit funds across borders.
The accused, identified as Chetan Gangani, a resident of Kamrej in Surat, was arrested for his role in facilitating the illegal transfers. Investigators revealed that Gangani helped convert nearly Rs 10 crore of fraud proceeds into USDT (Tether) a stable cryptocurrency and transferred the amount to a Pakistan-linked wallet through the BitGet exchange.
Authorities said the transactions occurred over four months, during which Gangani earned a 0.10% commission per transaction. Further analysis showed that the Pakistani wallet had received a total of Rs 29 crore, with Rs 10 crore directly linked to Gangani&rsquo;s activities.
Explaining the money trail, police said that cyber fraud victims&rsquo; money was first deposited into mule accounts, then withdrawn through cheques, ATMs, and online payment apps, before being converted into cryptocurrency and transferred abroad.
&ldquo;The investigation confirms that the fraud money was converted into crypto and sent to members of a Pakistan and Dubai-based cyber syndicate,&rdquo; said a senior CID official. &ldquo;This operation combined digital forensics and human intelligence to trace the funds through multiple financial layers.&rdquo;
The case has been registered under Sections 318(4), 61(2), and 317(2) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, which pertains to cheating and fraudulent electronic transactions.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi lauded the investigation, stating, &ldquo;Gujarat has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against cybercrime. Our investment in cyber intelligence and digital tracking has strengthened the police&rsquo;s ability to dismantle global fraud networks.&rdquo;
Officials said further arrests are likely as the investigation expands to identify other suspects linked to the international syndicate.
