An IndiGo flight scheduled to depart from Goa to Surat was grounded on Monday following a security breach involving a passenger who allegedly interfered with the aircraft's emergency exit system before takeoff. The incident occurred at Dabolim Airport and involved 34-year-old Divyesh Sidpara, a native of Gujarat.
The flight was preparing for departure when Sidpara reportedly opened the emergency flap cover, disregarding explicit warnings issued by the airline crew. The crew responded immediately to manage the situation, preventing any further complications.
A formal complaint was lodged with Dabolim Police by Prajakta Gawas, Assistant Manager (Security) of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, which operates IndiGo. The interference triggered a technical fault and raised safety concerns, prompting authorities to label the incident as a major violation of onboard protocols.
Police confirmed that the aircraft had not yet taken off when the passenger attempted to open the exit. Though no physical injuries were caused, the act is considered a direct threat to passenger safety and operational procedures.
Sidpara has been booked under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. This provision addresses actions that may endanger human life or personal safety due to negligence or recklessness. In instances where no harm occurs, the offence can attract a penalty of up to three months in prison, a fine of Rs 2,500, or both.
Police Sub-Inspector Akanksh Dessai is conducting the investigation. Authorities have confirmed that legal proceedings are underway and stated that such violations will be dealt with seriously to uphold aviation safety standards.
