A statewide crackdown on Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) misuse has led Gujarat&rsquo;s health department to suspend 34 private hospitals and 17 doctors over the last two years. The intensified scrutiny follows the high-profile Khyati Multispeciality Hospital case in Ahmedabad, where alleged fraud and unnecessary surgeries triggered a system-wide review.
Data reviewed by Benefit News shows that Ahmedabad and Rajkot accounted for the highest number of suspensions, with five hospitals each. Patan and Vadodara followed, alongside a spread of action across districts ranging from Junagadh and Kheda to Dahod, Bhavnagar, Bharuch and Jamnagar. The violations spanned multispeciality, paediatric, cardiology, oncology, gynaecology and urology facilities.
Audits uncovered mismatched medical records, unjustified procedures, and documentation gaps under PMJAY protocols. Many suspensions were issued after November 2024, suggesting an escalation post-Khyati case. The suspended doctors, across paediatrics, gynaecology, oncology and cardiology were flagged for authorising treatments unsupported by evidence or endorsing claims later deemed irregular.
Health Commissioner Harshadkumar Patel said the state has &ldquo;consistently penalised&rdquo; misuse and has sharpened oversight since the Ahmedabad case. Experts note that Gujarat&rsquo;s high PMJAY utilisation requires rigorous monitoring, with vulnerabilities in digital verification and real-time audits leaving space for systemic abuse. More suspensions are expected as further reviews conclude.
