The Gujarat Police have earned accolades from the U.S. Embassy for their successful crackdown on an illegal call centre in Ahmedabad&rsquo;s Hansol area, which was reportedly defrauding American citizens through a bogus loan scheme.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy commended the swift action taken by Indian authorities, noting that by charging those involved with cheating and criminal conspiracy, a clear message has been sent against cybercrime.
&ldquo;The United States and India remain committed to taking decisive action against entities that threaten public safety and security,&rdquo; the statement read.
The illegal call centre, posing as a legitimate business, allegedly lured American citizens with fake loan offers, extracting personal information and money through fraudulent means. Based on intelligence inputs, police raided the premises and arrested two individuals, seizing digital evidence such as laptops, mobile phones, and call logs pointing to a coordinated scam targeting overseas victims.
The arrested suspects have been booked under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify others involved and assess the full financial impact.
The incident comes amid rising concerns over international cyber scams, where fraudsters target vulnerable populations across borders using increasingly sophisticated methods. Experts stress the importance of international collaboration, intelligence sharing, and strong enforcement to curb such crimes.
Recent U.S. government data highlights Gujarat&rsquo;s outsized role in illegal immigration and asylum claims. In fiscal year 2024, more than 90,000 Indians were caught at the U.S. border, nearly half from Gujarat. In the first five months of 2025 alone, 10,382 Indians mostly Gujaratis were apprehended, marking a 70% drop from the same period the previous year.
Among asylum seekers, Gujaratis also stand out. Of the 41,330 Indian applicants in 2023, around 5,430 from Gujarat were granted asylum approximately 13% of all successful claims from the state. This underscores Gujarat's significant representation in both illegal entry and legal asylum efforts, despite Indians making up only about 3% of overall U.S. border apprehensions in recent years.
