Jignesh Shah, serving as the Estate/TDO Inspector in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)&rsquo;s East Zone, was arrested on Thursday by the Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly acquiring assets significantly beyond his lawful income.
The ACB&rsquo;s action followed a complaint indicating large-scale corruption by Shah during his service at the AMC. A detailed probe was launched, focusing on his financial dealings from April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2022. Forensic audits were conducted with the involvement of chartered accountants to assess his financial history.
The findings revealed that Shah had accumulated wealth totalling Rs 3,07,49,991&mdash;calculated to be 102.47 per cent higher than his known income over the ten-year span. The investigation further uncovered that investments had been made not only in his name but also in the names of his relatives and associates.
Assets identified by the ACB included two commercial units in Memnagar, residential flats in Jodhpur and Khanpur, gold valued at Rs 1.34 crore, a four-wheeler vehicle, and multiple bank accounts across approximately 15 to 17 institutions. Officials suspect that these holdings were acquired through abuse of his official position.
Following the investigation, an offence was officially registered on June 19 at the ACB police station in Ahmedabad under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), and the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act, 1988. Shah was subsequently arrested and taken into custody the same day.
The investigation is being supervised by Assistant Director KB Chudasama, with Police Inspector VD Chaudhary in charge of the operation. PI DN Patel has been assigned to continue the inquiry.
A senior officer from the ACB stated, &ldquo;We are currently investigating several such complaints, and more arrests are likely to follow soon.&rdquo;&nbsp;
Authorities indicated that Shah&rsquo;s arrest is part of a wider campaign to uncover and act upon illicit wealth amassed by public servants across the state. They added that further revelations concerning misconduct within AMC may emerge as the investigation advances.
