In September 2001, a routine patrol inside the Konanakallu Reserve Forest in Karnataka led to a chilling discovery. The victim, a man in his forties, had little on him apart from a bank passbook and a handwritten mobile number. When police dialled the number, the call unexpectedly opened a bigger mystery. The man who answered claimed he was alive and well. He soon revealed that his driver and a companion had gone missing while on an assignment to collect a large sum of cash.
The body was later identified as that of the companion. The money he had gone to collect was missing. Investigators now knew they were dealing with a murder motivated by robbery, but the suspects had seemingly vanished.
This was an era before location tracking or digital surveillance. Phones were scarce, and suspects relied on STD booths to stay ahead of police. Investigators painstakingly examined call records linked to the numbers found at the crime scene, producing long lists of calls made from public booths across multiple districts.
Teams were dispatched simultaneously, moving from town to town, questioning booth owners and shopkeepers. Progress was slow, but one unusual detail stood out. Several calls were traced to a neighbourhood in Bengaluru, where a shopkeeper remembered the caller for an odd reason: he had recently purchased two large crates of eggs.
The detail seemed trivial, but it proved crucial. Police learned the eggs were bought to justify the purchase of a refrigerator, suspected to have been acquired with stolen money. Using this lead, officers narrowed their search to cab drivers and recent residents in the area.
The trail eventually led to a cab driver found with a large amount of unexplained cash. Under questioning, he revealed how the crime unfolded. The victim had been drugged, killed and dumped in the forest. The group then scattered, relying on public phone booths to avoid detection.
Within days, the remaining accused were tracked down. By 2005, all were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. One later attempted to flee but was arrested again years later.
