Al Falah University founder Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui, already under Enforcement Directorate custody in a terror-linked money-laundering probe, is now facing an additional ₹2 crore fraud case after a fresh FIR was filed in Bhopal.
Siddiqui, who recently came under scrutiny following alleged links to the Delhi blast investigation, is accused by the ED of generating over ₹415 crore through fake accreditation claims and misleading assertions of statutory recognition to attract students.
According to police officials, Siddiqui had been evading the Bhopal Police for years despite being wanted in an older financial fraud case. Between 1997 and 2001, Siddiqui and his brother Hamood reportedly operated a chit fund company in Bhopal, promising the public double returns before disappearing in 2001. FIRs were lodged at Talaiya and Shahjahanabad police stations after several citizens complained of losing their savings, including funds belonging to gas tragedy victims.
While Siddiqui later secured anticipatory bail, the case resurfaced amid the ED&rsquo;s ongoing probe. Investigators allege that funds siphoned through older scams may have been diverted into activities linked to the current terror-financing investigation.
The ED arrested Siddiqui this week, stating that he and the Al Falah charitable trust collected over ₹415 crore by misleading students with fabricated NAAC accreditation and false UGC recognition. The agency told the court that Siddiqui exercised full control over the university&rsquo;s admissions, accounting, fee records and IT systems, enabling him to tamper with or destroy evidence.
Authorities also noted the rapid rise of the Al Falah group since the 1990s, despite financial disclosures that do not match its asset base.
Siddiqui will remain in ED custody until December 1 as the multi-layered investigation into financial fraud, accreditation irregularities and alleged terror-funding links continues. Meanwhile, the Mhow Cantonment Board has issued a notice regarding unauthorised construction on Siddiqui&rsquo;s ancestral property.
