Serious questions have emerged regarding the handling of the law college rape case in Kolkata, after it was discovered that the FIR named the accused only by initials &mdash; "M", "J", and "P" &mdash; instead of their full names. The three accused, identified separately as Monojit Mishra, Jaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, are all reportedly connected to the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the Trinamool Congress.
Opposition parties have alleged that the Kolkata Police deliberately withheld the full names to obscure the political affiliations of the accused. Legal experts also expressed concern, pointing out that if the victim had identified the accused, there was no justification for using only initials.
Senior Calcutta High Court advocate Firdous Samim criticised the move, calling it ethically wrong, especially when police could verify identities during a preliminary investigation.
CPI(M) leader Shatarup Ghosh and BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh also accused the police of a deliberate attempt to shield those with political links. The matter has drawn national attention, with a National Commission for Women (NCW) delegation, led by Archana Majumdar, visiting the college and planning to meet the victim's family.
Meanwhile, BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar, who was arrested while protesting against the incident, has been released after reportedly spending the night at the police headquarters without signing a bail bond.
The case continues to stir public outrage, raising concerns about political interference in justice, transparency in investigations, and victim protection.
