Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged death of a woman doctor in Satara district last week, officials said on Friday.
The doctor, a native of Beed district in central Maharashtra, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan on October 23. 
A note written on her palm accused sub-inspector Gopal Badane of repeatedly raping her and software engineer Prashant Bankar of mentally harassing her. 
Both accused have been arrested.
Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, instructed the State Director General of Police to immediately constitute an SIT headed by a woman IPS officer.
The decision follows mounting pressure from citizens and political parties demanding justice for the deceased&rsquo;s family. 
Her relatives had also urged the government to order an SIT probe to ensure strict action against the accused.
BJP leader Chitra Wagh expressed gratitude to the chief minister for setting up the SIT and prioritising the investigation.
