What was initially believed to be a tragic hit-and-run during an evening walk in Rajasthan&rsquo;s Sri Ganganagar district has now been exposed as a premeditated murder allegedly orchestrated by a young woman with the help of her longtime lover.
Police investigations revealed that 23-year-old Anjali Kumar plotted the killing of her husband, Ashish Kumar, 27, reportedly because she was unhappy in a marriage arranged by her family despite being in a relationship with another man for nearly seven years. Authorities have arrested four individuals in connection with the case.
The incident occurred on Friday evening in the 01KLM village area. Anjali first told investigators that a speeding motorcycle had struck Ashish from behind while the couple was out for a walk. The story appeared credible until the post-mortem examination raised red flags, showing injuries inconsistent with a road accident and suggesting a violent assault.
Further probing uncovered that Anjali&rsquo;s relationship with Sanjay, 25, began during their college years in Ravla and continued after her marriage in October last year. Investigators believe resentment over the forced marriage and her husband&rsquo;s refusal to allow her to pursue higher studies, seen as a way to maintain contact with Sanjay, intensified the motive.
The murder was allegedly planned over two weeks before the crime when Anjali visited her parental home. During this period, the couple reportedly finalised the plot and recruited two accomplices, Rohit and Siddharth, who later surveyed the location.
On the night of the murder, Anjali is said to have lured Ashish to a deserted stretch after dinner. She alerted Sanjay, who arrived with his associates and hid nearby. Once she signalled them, the trio attacked Ashish with rods and sticks, leaving him unconscious before smothering him to death. The autopsy confirmed severe head trauma along with signs of suffocation.
In an attempt to mislead investigators, Anjali allegedly staged the scene to resemble a robbery. She handed over Ashish&rsquo;s phone and her earrings to the attackers and pretended to lose consciousness. Based on her initial complaint, police registered a negligent driving case and began searching for an unidentified biker.
However, the absence of evidence supporting either a traffic collision or robbery deepened suspicions. During sustained questioning, Anjali reportedly confessed, leading to the swift arrest of all four accused.
Ashish had recently started working as a teacher at a private school just three days before his death. A murder case has now been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the conspiracy.
