A 77-year-old woman was allegedly thrashed, forced to drink urine and branded with an iron rod over allegations of black magic in a village in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Amravati district, police said on Saturday.
While the incident occurred on December 30, a police complaint was lodged earlier this month. The victim&rsquo;s son and daughter-in-law approached senior officials on Friday demanding action, an official said.&nbsp;
They also wrote a complaint to the district collector and superintendent of police, alleging that the elderly woman was alone at home on December 30 when her neighbours caught her on suspicion of black magic.
The victim is a resident of Retyakheda village in Chikhaldara taluka, he said.
According to the complaint, the villagers allegedly beat the 77-year-old woman with a wooden stick and slapped her. They even branded the victim on her hands and legs with hot iron rods.
Additionally, the woman was also forced to drink urine and consume dog excreta. She was then paraded around the village with a garland made of slippers around her neck.&nbsp;
Since the woman&rsquo;s son and daughter-in-law had been away for work at the time, they lodged a police complaint on January 5, upon their return to the village.&nbsp;&nbsp;
A police official has been assigned to verify the incident at the village, which is located in the interiors of a forest.
Verification of the police station, where the complaint was lodged, will also be conducted. Senior officials seek to determine whether the concerned police station tried to hide the incident. &nbsp;
