The Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth ₹7.9 crore belonging to several high-profile sportspersons and film personalities as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an illegal online betting operation.
Those whose assets have been attached include former Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Robin Uthappa, actors Sonu Sood and Urvashi Rautela, former Trinamool Congress MP Mimi Chakraborty, actor Neha Sharma, Bengali actor Ankush Hazra, and Urvashi Rautela&rsquo;s mother.
The case is connected to an illegal offshore betting platform and its associated brands, which are suspected to be involved in unlawful gambling activities across India. The overall betting operation under investigation is estimated to be worth more than ₹1,000 crore.
In a statement, the agency said, &ldquo;ED initiated investigation on the basis of multiple FIRs registered by various State Police agencies against the operators of the illegal offshore betting platform 1xBet. The investigation has revealed that 1xBet and its surrogate brand 1xBat, 1xbat Sporting lines were engaged in promoting and facilitating illegal online betting and gambling operations across India.&rdquo;
According to the findings, the attached properties include both movable and immovable assets. These reportedly comprise assets worth about ₹2.5 crore linked to Yuvraj Singh, around ₹1 crore associated with Sonu Sood, ₹59 lakh connected to Mimi Chakraborty, ₹8.26 lakh belonging to Robin Uthappa, ₹1.26 crore tied to Neha Sharma, ₹47 lakh linked to Ankush Hazra, and assets worth ₹2.02 crore held by Urvashi Rautela&rsquo;s mother.
The agency alleged that the celebrities were involved in promoting the betting platform through endorsement arrangements.
&ldquo;ED investigation revealed that the celebrities knowingly entered into endorsement agreements with foreign entities for the promotion of 1xBet through its surrogates. These endorsements were made in return for payments routed through foreign entities to conceal the illicit origin of the funds, which are linked to Proceeds of Crime (POC) generated from illegal betting activities,&rdquo; the statement said.
The investigation is ongoing, with the agency continuing to trace financial transactions and identify the wider network linked to the betting operation.
