A 20-year-old Delhi University student suffered acid burns on her hands after being attacked by a stalker and his two aides in Delhi&rsquo;s Ashok Vihar area on Sunday. The student had reportedly been facing harassment from the accused, identified as Jitender, for over a year.
According to the victim&rsquo;s family, Jitender&rsquo;s wife had earlier humiliated the student publicly when she was confronted about her husband&rsquo;s stalking behaviour. Despite repeated complaints, the family alleged that the local police urged them to &ldquo;compromise&rdquo; instead of taking action.
The attack took place suddenly as three men on a bike allegedly approached the student and threw acid at her. She managed to protect her face with her bag, but suffered around five per cent burns on her hands. Her mobile phone was destroyed in the incident.
The Delhi University Students&rsquo; Union (DUSU) president, Aryan Maan, demanded immediate arrest and strict punishment for the accused, stressing that the student had endured stalking for more than 18 months.
Police have confirmed that Jitender, who is married and has a child, had been persistently following and harassing the student. A search operation is underway to locate and arrest him and his accomplices.
