Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara revealed that in the past year, drugs worth ₹45 crore, including 4,000 kg of marijuana, were seized across the state. Several foreign students were also found involved in drug-related activities.
He made the remarks while inaugurating an event organised by the Bengaluru City Police to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Kanteerava Stadium.
Parameshwara appealed to students to avoid the trap of drug addiction and urged citizens to help build a drug-free Karnataka. &ldquo;Laws are important, but awareness and community participation are key,&rdquo; he said, warning of stricter legal measures if needed.
The minister highlighted that 6.5 lakh students have been covered under awareness programmes. Police officials now visit educational institutions monthly, and each college is mandated to set up an anti-drug committee.
He also launched the 'Raksha' QR code system, enabling citizens to report drug activity anonymously. The process for the destruction of ₹45 crore worth of seized narcotics was initiated online.
The event concluded with awards to heads of institutions who partnered with the police in anti-drug awareness efforts.
