A 29-year-old government doctor&rsquo;s suicide in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Satara has triggered outrage and multiple investigations, as fresh claims and counterclaims continue to surface.
The doctor was found dead in a hotel room last Thursday night, with a message written on her palm accusing police sub-inspector Gopal Badane of sexual assault and her landlord&rsquo;s son, Prashant Bankar, of harassment. Her family alleged that she faced political and police pressure to falsify postmortem and fitness reports for accused persons.
The victim&rsquo;s cousin claimed serious procedural lapses, including delays in the postmortem and possible tampering of evidence. The family also suspects another suicide note might exist, citing her history of filing formal complaints about workplace coercion.
An earlier letter from June shows the doctor had named Gopal Badane while reporting the forced issuance of medical fitness certificates. Despite her repeated complaints and an RTI appeal in August, no action was taken.
Police officials, however, accused the doctor of refusing late-night duties and declaring accused persons &ldquo;unfit&rdquo; without proper grounds.
Both Badane and Bankar were arrested on October 25. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ruled out the involvement of BJP leader Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar and MLA Sachin Patil, who were earlier named in the doctor&rsquo;s complaint, drawing criticism from opposition leaders demanding an impartial probe.
