A chilling phone call to her brother, followed by screams and a shocking confession by her husband, marked the final moments of a 27-year-old Delhi Police woman constable who later died after a brutal assault at her home in southwest Delhi.
The policewoman, identified as Kajal, was posted as a commando with the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Special Cell. She succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday at a private hospital in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, days after her husband allegedly attacked her with a metal dumbbell and repeatedly smashed her head against a door frame at their Dwarka Mor residence.
According to senior police officers, the assault followed an altercation over domestic issues and alleged dowry demands. After the attack, the accused, Ankur Chaudhary (28), reportedly called Kajal&rsquo;s brother, Nikhil, himself a Delhi Police constable, and told him that he had killed his sister.
Nikhil said the incident unfolded around 10 pm on January 22, when Ankur called him, saying Kajal was arguing with him. Kajal briefly spoke to her brother in an attempt to explain the situation. Moments later, Ankur allegedly snatched the phone, asked Nikhil to record the call, and threatened to kill her. Nikhil then heard his sister screaming before the call abruptly disconnected.
A few minutes later, Ankur allegedly called again and repeated that Kajal was dead, asking her brother to come and take her body. When Nikhil reached Delhi around midnight, Kajal had already been admitted to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead.
Kajal was initially treated at a hospital near Dwarka before being shifted to another facility in Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad, on January 25. She succumbed to her injuries around 6 am on January 27.
Originally from Ganaur in Haryana, Kajal joined the Delhi Police in 2022 and later underwent rigorous commando training before her posting with the SWAT unit. She had married Ankur in November 2023 after a long relationship, and the couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who was with his maternal grandparents at the time of the incident.
Police initially registered a case of attempt to murder and arrested Ankur Chaudhary on the night of the assault. Following Kajal&rsquo;s death, the case has now been converted into a murder charge. Investigators are also examining allegations of dowry harassment raised by Kajal&rsquo;s family.
