Ahead of New Year celebrations, Delhi Police launched a large-scale preventive crackdown across the capital under Operation Aaghat 3.0, resulting in the arrest of 285 people and the detention of hundreds more. The operation was aimed at curbing crime and ensuring public safety during the festive period, when crowds and late-night gatherings increase security risks.
Police officials said the arrests were made under the Excise Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and the Gambling Act. In addition, more than 500 people were detained as part of preventive measures, while 116 individuals with prior criminal records were taken into custody.
The operation led to significant recoveries, including firearms, ammunition, sharp weapons, narcotics and large quantities of illicit liquor. Police seized 21 country-made pistols, 20 live cartridges and 27 knives. A total of 12,258 quarters of illegal liquor and 6.01 kilograms of ganja were also recovered.
Cash amounting to ₹2,30,990 was seized from gambling-related activities, along with 310 mobile phones. Police also recovered or seized 231 two-wheelers and one four-wheeler during the operation.
Senior officers said the drive also targeted repeat offenders, with ten property offenders and five auto-lifters arrested. According to the police, the operation forms part of a broader strategy to deter criminal activity, strengthen law and order, and reassure the public during the holiday season.
Operation Aaghat 3.0 follows similar drives conducted earlier this year. The first phase, launched in September, focused on southeast Delhi and led to multiple arrests and seizures of firearms and narcotics. A second phase in October expanded the crackdown on organised crime, habitual offenders, bootleggers and drug peddlers.
Police officials said such intensive operations will continue in the coming days to maintain security and prevent criminal incidents as the city welcomes the New Year.
