In a heartbreaking incident, three members of a family in Karnataka&rsquo;s Belagavi district allegedly died by suicide over mounting debt linked to chit fund transactions. A suicide note recovered by police reveals betrayal by another goldsmith as the key reason.
The deceased were identified as Santosh Kurudekar, a local goldsmith, his mother, Mangala Kurudekar, and his sister, Suvarna Kurudekar. Santosh&rsquo;s other sister, Sunanda, survived but is in critical condition at a hospital.
The incident took place in Joshimal, under Shahpur police station limits. According to police, the family consumed poison together. The suicide note, written in Marathi, alleged that one Raju Kurudekar, also a goldsmith, took 500 grams of gold from them and refused to return it.
Worse, Raju and his wife reportedly threatened the family and falsely accused them of absconding with 2-3 kg of gold from others. This led to public harassment and mental trauma, as detailed in the note.
The victims appealed in their letter for police to recover the lost gold and ensure justice is served.
Police investigations indicate that Santosh persuaded his mother and sisters over two hours before they all took the fatal step. Sunanda, who initially resisted, later consumed poison after seeing her family collapse.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the alleged fraud, harassment, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
