Police sub-inspector (PSI) Gopal Badane, accused in connection with the alleged suicide of a woman government doctor in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Satara district, was arrested on Saturday evening&mdash;just hours after the arrest of his co-accused.
Earlier that morning, a team from Phaltan police apprehended software engineer Prashant Bankar from Pune. 
The doctor had named both Badane and Bankar in her suicide note.
According to Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi, PSI Badane later surrendered at the Phaltan Rural Police Station.
Bankar, accused of mentally harassing the doctor and charged with abetment of suicide, was presented before a district court in Satara and remanded to four days of police custody.
The woman doctor, originally from Beed district in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Marathwada region and posted at a government hospital in Satara, was found hanging in a Phaltan hotel room on Thursday night.
In a note written on her palm, she accused PSI Badane of raping her multiple times and alleged that Bankar had mentally harassed her.&nbsp;
Following her death, police registered a case of rape and abetment of suicide against both men in Phaltan.
Officials said that Bankar is the son of the landlord of the house where the doctor had been staying. 
She reportedly spoke with him over the phone shortly before taking her life.
After his name surfaced during the investigation, PSI Badane was suspended from duty.
The doctor was cremated on Friday night in her native village in Wadwani tehsil, Beed.&nbsp;
Her family has demanded capital punishment for both accused.
Relatives claimed that the doctor had repeatedly complained of harassment, but her grievances were ignored. 
One family member alleged that she had been pressured to alter medical reports at the sub-district hospital where she was assigned autopsy duties.
&ldquo;She was frequently asked by political figures in Phaltan to change post-mortem reports. She had lodged complaints against the PSI mentioned in her note, but no action was taken,&rdquo; a relative told a news channel.
BJP MLA Suresh Dhas demanded that the Member of Parliament, who allegedly tried to influence the doctor, should also be named as an accused. 
However, he did not reveal the MP&rsquo;s identity.
A purported letter submitted by the doctor earlier this year to authorities in Satara suggested that she faced threats from police officials and taunts about crime in her home district, Beed.
Her cousins, also doctors, alleged that the hospital administration deliberately assigned her post-mortem work to harass her.
The family revealed that the young doctor aspired to pursue an MD (Doctor of Medicine) and was preparing for entrance exams. She had taken an education loan of ₹3 lakh for her MBBS degree, which was still unpaid.
&ldquo;Her father is a farmer and not educated. I&rsquo;m a teacher and helped her with schooling in Beed. She dreamed of studying further in medicine, ENT, or non-clinical branches,&rdquo; her uncle told PTI.
