In a disturbing incident in Odisha&rsquo;s Ganjam district, 10 youths have been detained by police for allegedly gang-raping a college student at the Gopalpur sea beach on the night of June 15.
According to officials, the victim, an undergraduate student, had visited the beach with her boyfriend when the group of accused&mdash;believed to be from the Hinjilcut area&mdash;approached them around 8 p.m. The group reportedly harassed the couple, took intimate photos to blackmail them, and then restrained the boyfriend.
Three of the accused allegedly dragged the girl to a secluded spot and sexually assaulted her.
The couple reported the crime soon after, and based on the victim&rsquo;s complaint, police registered an FIR at Gopalpur Police Station. Swift action led to the arrest of the two main suspects on Sunday night.
By Monday, five more were picked up following raids in Hinjilcut, and the remaining three, who attempted to flee to a neighbouring state, were caught late Monday night.
The victim&rsquo;s statement has been recorded, and a medical examination has been conducted. All suspects are expected to be formally arrested and produced in court.
The case has triggered public outrage, with locals questioning the lack of security at Gopalpur beach, a popular tourist destination.
