Police in Maharashtra's Thane have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly kidnapping, sexually assaulting, and murdering a 10-year-old girl on Monday night in a residential building in the Mumbra area.
According to officials, the suspect, identified as Asif Mansoori, allegedly lured the victim from a nearby building by offering her toys. He then reportedly took her to his sixth-floor apartment where the assault occurred. Following the attack, authorities say the perpetrator cut the child's throat with a sharp weapon before disposing of her body by pushing it through his bathroom window into a vertical duct.
The incident was reported to the Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell at 11:48 PM on Monday, according to cell chief Yasin Tadvi. Residents heard a loud thud and alerted authorities after discovering the partially clothed body of the child in the building's duct when viewed from a first-floor apartment.
Emergency responders, including police, fire brigade teams, and disaster management personnel, conducted a challenging rescue operation due to the narrow structure of the shaft. The child was transported to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where doctors pronounced her deadon arrival.
Police initially registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and tampering with evidence, along with provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Following autopsy confirmation of sexual assault and the throat injury, additional charges were filed including kidnapping and multiple counts of rape.
Investigators methodically checked each apartment in the building and discovered an open bathroom window in the suspect's residence. The suspect was subsequently apprehended from the sixth floor of the building. According to police officials, another child identified Mansoori as the person who had lured her friend away, and the suspect reportedly confessed during interrogation.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence in this deeply disturbing case.
