Two men were arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting a woman police constable and tearing her clothes during an anti-mining protest in Tamnar, located in Chhattisgarh&rsquo;s Raigarh district. The incident occurred last week but sparked widespread outrage after a video surfaced on social media on Thursday.
According to police, the constable was separated from her team as the protest turned violent and was left alone in an open field. The video shows her on the ground, visibly distressed, while two men allegedly assault her. One of the accused is seen pulling her clothes, while another records the incident on a mobile phone and threatens her.
Inspector General of Police (Bilaspur range) Sanjeev Shukla said investigations are ongoing, and more individuals involved in the incident are being identified based on digital evidence and statements from the arrested accused. He confirmed that the accused has been booked under multiple serious charges, including attempt to murder and robbery.
The incident drew sharp political reactions. The Congress party shared a blurred version of the video on social media, calling the assault deeply disturbing and raising concerns about women&rsquo;s safety and law and order in the state. Senior Congress leaders described the incident as shameful and questioned the growing public anger towards the police and administration.
Violence erupted during protests against a proposed coal block allotment, with locals demanding the cancellation of a public hearing. Villagers claimed the project would lead to displacement and loss of livelihood. During the clashes, two officials were injured in stone-pelting, while police vehicles and an ambulance were set on fire.
Protesters also allegedly stormed a coal handling plant, damaging infrastructure including a conveyor belt, vehicles and office property. Authorities said the situation escalated after police attempted to clear the protest site, following which a group of women allegedly attacked a police officer.
A day after the unrest, the Raigarh district administration announced that it had initiated the process to cancel the public hearing related to the coal block allotment.
