A special court in Ahmedabad has sentenced a Central Excise and Service Tax Inspector to five years of rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case, holding him guilty of amassing wealth far beyond his known sources of income.
The court convicted Kaushik Anvantrai Karelia, who served as an Appraiser and Preventive Officer at the Kandla Special Economic Zone during the check period and was later posted as an Inspector in Bhavnagar. Along with the prison term, the court imposed a fine of ₹63 lakh.
Karelia&rsquo;s wife, Pooja Karelia, was also convicted in the case and sentenced to one year of imprisonment with a fine of ₹50,000 for abetment.
The case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation after allegations emerged that the accused had accumulated assets grossly disproportionate to his lawful income while holding public office. During the probe, investigators expanded the check period to examine financial transactions spanning nearly a decade.
The investigation revealed that the accused and his wife had amassed assets amounting to more than ₹57 lakh, exceeding their known income by over 180 percent. A chargesheet was subsequently filed, and the matter proceeded to trial.
After evaluating the evidence on record, the court found both accused guilty and pronounced the sentences, concluding a long-running case involving a serving public official.
