The CBI Court on October 13, 2025, framed charges against 14 individuals, including former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, son Tejashwi Yadav, close aide Prem Chand Gupta, IRCTC officials, and the Kochhar brothers, in the high-profile IRCTC case.
The case, first registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on July 5, 2017, alleges that during his tenure as Union Minister of Railways, Lalu Prasad Yadav conspired with Vijay and Vinay Kochhar of Sujata Hotel Private Limited (SHPL) to illegally favor the company in awarding leases for Bengal Nagpur Railway (BNR) Hotels in Ranchi and Puri. The investigation claims that Lalu Yadav, in collusion with IRCTC officials, extended undue favors to SHPL in exchange for extraneous benefits.
Further, the case highlights the alleged transfer of high-value prime land in Patna. The Kochhar brothers sold the property to a company controlled by Prem Chand Gupta, a Rajya Sabha MP and close aide of Lalu Yadav. The property, reportedly acquired at a significantly undervalued price, was later held by Lalu Prasad Yadav&rsquo;s family members, Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, benefiting them indirectly.
Following the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the 14 accused, including the former CM and his family. The court has scheduled the prosecution evidence from October 27 to November 7, 2025, with hearings set on a day-to-day basis.
This case, which has been under investigation for over eight years, has attracted widespread attention for its alleged misuse of official power and favoritism in the allocation of railway properties. The trial is expected to be closely monitored by political analysts and the public alike, given the stature of the accused and the high-profile nature of the allegations.
