The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against Pinku Kumar, a former branch manager of the State Bank of India in Karimganj, Assam, for amassing illegal assets valued at over ₹80 lakh. He is already under investigation for his alleged role in a multi-crore loan scam involving the use of forged documents.
The Shillong-based Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI filed the Disproportionate Assets case on June 27, following a preliminary inquiry. The complaint alleges that between April 1, 2019, and March 27, 2025, Kumar illicitly enriched himself, accumulating assets 81.84% beyond his known income&mdash;totalling ₹99.20 lakh.
According to the FIR, the evidence points to criminal misconduct under Sections 13(2) and 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The investigation previously linked Kumar to two separate corruption cases filed in March, in which he allegedly colluded with brokers Sumen Paul and Jadab Paul to approve fraudulent loans, causing significant financial losses to SBI.
Searches in the earlier cases led to the seizure of 481 grams of gold, 11.11 grams of diamond jewellery, and over 1 kg of silver. The probe into both the disproportionate assets and loan fraud is ongoing.
