The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested an Indian smuggler and seized over 2.45 kg of gold, valued at nearly ₹2.43 crore, along the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
The incident took place in Lakshmipur village, close to the zero line of the border. Acting on specific intelligence, BSF troops from the 67th Battalion, posted at the Lakshmipur Border Outpost (BOP), heightened security and surveillance on Tuesday morning.
At around 7:45 a.m., jawans stopped a motorcycle coming from Lakshmipur village. The rider&rsquo;s suspicious behaviour prompted a thorough search, which led to the discovery of two plastic-wrapped packets hidden under the seat. The packets contained one gold bar and 16 gold biscuits.
The total weight of the gold was 2.451 kg, with an estimated market value of ₹2,42,94,960. Both the smuggler and the motorcycle were taken into custody.
During initial interrogation, the smuggler revealed he was transporting the gold from Lakshmipur to Bongaon bus stand via Boyra village, for a promised commission of ₹1,000 per kg.
N.K. Pandey, DIG, BSF South Bengal Frontier, praised the jawans for their vigilance and called upon border residents to report smuggling activities. He also promoted the BSF&rsquo;s &lsquo;Seema Sathi&rsquo; helpline (14419) and WhatsApp tip line (9903472227) for confidential and rewarded information.
The seized gold has been handed over to the concerned department for further legal action.
