A 21-year-old engineering student from a private college in South Bengaluru has been arrested for allegedly raping his classmate inside a men&rsquo;s washroom on campus. The accused, identified as Jeevan Gowda, a sixth-semester student, was taken into custody on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody.
According to police, the incident occurred on October 10, while the survivor, a seventh-semester student, filed a complaint five days later on October 15. The case has been registered under Section 64 (Punishment for Rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Investigations reveal that the two students were former classmates, but Gowda had repeated a semester due to backlogs. On the day of the incident, the survivor reportedly met him to collect some belongings. During the lunch break, Gowda allegedly forced her into a men&rsquo;s toilet on the sixth floor and sexually assaulted her, also taking away her phone during the assault.
The survivor later confided in her friends and informed her parents before lodging a police complaint. Hanumanthanagar Police are leading the investigation, and forensic and digital evidence is being examined. Authorities said there were no CCTV cameras on the floor where the crime took place, posing a challenge for evidence collection.
Police have reconstructed the crime scene and continue to gather technical proof to strengthen the case.
