A 23-year-old dental student was found dead in Bengaluru on January 9, in what police are investigating as a case of suicide, after her family accused college staff of subjecting her to repeated humiliation and harassment.
The student, who was in her third year at a private dental college, was found hanging at her residence. She was the only child of her parents. According to her mother, the young woman had taken leave earlier in the week due to eye pain but was allegedly publicly humiliated when she returned to college for missing a seminar.
In a complaint filed with the police, the family alleged that lecturers made derogatory remarks about the student&rsquo;s skin colour, clothing and personal appearance. They also claimed that her ambition of becoming a doctor was mocked and that she was academically sidelined by being denied radiology case work and participation in academic activities.
The complaint further alleged that insensitive language was used when she raised health concerns, creating an environment of emotional distress. Her family believes this treatment pushed her into severe mental trauma.
Following her death, fellow students gathered outside the morgue in protest, demanding accountability and justice.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the student&rsquo;s death. College authorities have said an internal inquiry is also underway as the matter remains under review.
