A birthday celebration at a caf&eacute; in Uttar Pradesh&rsquo;s Bareilly turned controversial after members of a right-wing group disrupted the gathering, alleging &ldquo;love jihad&rdquo; due to the presence of Muslim youths at the party.
The incident took place on Saturday night in the Prem Nagar area, where a first-year BSc Nursing student was celebrating her birthday with nine friends, including five women and four men. Among the attendees were two Muslim youths. Their presence reportedly drew the attention of members of the Bajrang Dal, who stormed into the caf&eacute;, raised slogans and interrupted the party.
According to reports, one of the Muslim youths was assaulted during the confrontation, and a woman who attempted to intervene was also allegedly manhandled. Videos purportedly showing the chaos inside the caf&eacute; later surfaced on social media, though their authenticity could not be independently verified.
As the situation escalated, police reached the spot and took the group to the police station for questioning. Two Muslim youths, identified as Shan and Waqif, were later fined for breach of peace, while a caf&eacute; staffer was also issued a challan for disturbing public order. One of the youths was briefly taken into custody, while the other initially fled the scene.
No punitive action was reported against the members of the right-wing group, who were advised by the police to disperse. Police officials stated that the families of those involved, including the student&rsquo;s relatives, were informed about the incident.
The episode has sparked debate over vigilantism and the use of &ldquo;love jihad&rdquo; allegations to disrupt private gatherings, once again raising concerns over personal freedoms and communal tensions in the state.
