A newborn baby was discovered packed in a bag on a train in Moradabad, exposing a horrific crime. The infant's birth on June 22 occurred while a minor girl, pregnant from alleged rape by her father, was being transported to Delhi by train for "treatment."
The teenage girl went into labour during the journey, delivering the baby boy in the train's toilet near Varanasi. The girl and her family then disembarked, leaving the baby in a bag in the toilet of another train at the same location. It was near Bareilly that vendors on the Patna-Chandigarh Summer Special heard the baby's cries and found him, still with his umbilical cord attached.
They immediately alerted the ticket-checking staff, who moved the infant to an air-conditioned coach to protect him from the heat and humidity. The baby was then taken to Moradabad for medical care.
How the Case Was Cracked?
Police located a SIM card in the bag with the baby. Tracing the SIM card's owner led them to the baby's minor mother, who had become pregnant as a result of rape. The family was located in Chhapra, Bihar.
The victim revealed that her father, who frequently drank, had been sexually abusing her for over a year before her pregnancy was discovered.
What Happens to the Baby Now?
Railway police brought the victim, the abandoned baby's mother, to Moradabad, where officials from Childline, a 24-hour rescue service, met with her. She formally stated that she could not afford to care for the child, a sentiment echoed by her mother and maternal grandmother, who accompanied her.
The baby is currently under the care of the Child Welfare Committee in Moradabad. Adoption proceedings will not begin for two months, allowing the victim a period to reconsider and potentially claim custody of her child. The primary investigation into the alleged rape is now with the police in Bihar.
