Weeks after the death of Tripura student Anjel Chakma following a brutal assault in Dehradun, another disturbing incident involving a student from the Northeast has been reported, this time from Madhya Pradesh.
According to police, five students have been expelled from Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU), Amarkantak, for allegedly assaulting a 22-year-old postgraduate student from Assam at a university hostel in Anuppur district.
The incident occurred around 4 pm on Tuesday when the victim was returning to his hostel room from the washroom. The accused allegedly questioned him about his identity and presence at the university before assaulting him. Following a complaint, police registered an FIR against the five students under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including voluntarily causing hurt, obscene acts, criminal intimidation and common intention.
University authorities informed police that the accused had already been expelled by the disciplinary committee a day before the FIR was filed. The victim&rsquo;s medical examination has been conducted, and the medico-legal report is awaited.
Police officials stated that the motive behind the assault is under investigation and that a possible racial angle will also be examined.
The incident has triggered political reactions in the state. The Congress accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of failing to ensure student safety, alleging that racist remarks preceded the assault. The BJP&rsquo;s student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), also protested the incident and warned of agitation if conditions at the university do not improve.
The attack comes shortly after the death of Anjel Chakma, who died on December 26 after being assaulted in Dehradun. While his family alleged racial targeting, police in Uttarakhand denied the claim. Investigations in both cases are ongoing.
