A tragic incident in Andhra Pradesh's YSR Kadapa district claimed the life of a 62-year-old woman after an electric scooter battery exploded while charging. The explosion occurred on Friday in Potladurthi village, Yerraguntla mandal, when Venkata Lakshmamma, who was resting on a sofa near the vehicle, suffered fatal burn injuries and died on the spot.
The intense blast not only gutted the scooter but also damaged nearby household items. Authorities have registered a case and shifted the body to Produttur&rsquo;s government hospital for post-mortem.
This is not an isolated event. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have reported multiple cases of electric two-wheeler battery explosions over the past few years. In 2022 alone, at least 10 people died in similar fire incidents, often caused during battery charging, most suspected due to overcharging or faulty battery mechanisms.
One of the most devastating incidents took place in Hyderabad in September 2022, where eight lives were lost after an EV showroom fire spread to a hotel above. Other reported cases in Vijayawada, Jagital, and Nizamabad also point to the recurring threat posed by malfunctioning or overcharged EV batteries.
As electric vehicles gain popularity, concerns over battery safety and regulation continue to grow, raising urgent questions about charging protocols and consumer awareness.
